7 Fun Holiday Apps for Kids (+ Giveaway!)

It's beginning to feel a lot like Merry Hanukkahkwanzaismtas. Yes, folks. The holidays are HERE.

Here are a few apps to help you celebrate the season with your kiddos. Great for entertaining while you're trying to squeeze in another grocery store trip (did you remember the flour this time?) or just some tech-savvy ways of adding holiday magic.

All apps are Bug approved. Even the Hanukkah ones, and we're not even Jewish. Plus we're giving away a Kiddie Christmas Tree app! Scroll down for more info.

Kiddie Christmas Tree: If your mini-me is driving you nuts removing the ornaments from the Christmas Tree in your family room, let 'em decorate their own on the Kiddie Christmas Tree App, created by Think Up! LLC. Jim Oxenford, the developer of the app, is a friend of mine and he created this for his adorable little girl Sophie a few years ago. The app has been revamped this year and is tons of fun -- plus it helps with color identification and counting! Double bonus? the kids get to 'shake' the device in order to clear the ornaments and try again. (If only taking down the real ornaments was so easy!). We're giving one of these away -- scroll down for more info! ($.99)

Nice-O-Meter: Baltimore's own KneeBouncers team has created a handy little app (all the elves are using it!) for parents to show their kids where they stand with Santa. Keep ‘em in line, but please use wisely! Parents can magically control the result {hint hint}. Check the website for details and how to download for your iPhone or Android Smart Phone. Think Elf on the Shelf goes techy. (FREE)

Portable North Pole:  In just a few easy steps, you can create a personalized video from Santa Claus for your children, friends, family members or colleagues a you choose, by providing a few little details about the person. You can even create and view your message via mobile phone. There is a limit to the number of times a video can be viewed when created with the mobile app. Love this idea! (Website is FREE, App is is $2.99).

Dr. Seuss Camera - The Grinch Edition! Last year, Oceanhouse Media created this handy little photo app. It's still a fav around our house. The Dr. Seuss Cam Grinch Edition includes 20 “Grinchmas” cards that you can personalize with your own photos. Yes, Virginia, you and your kiddos may Grinch yourself. They've also recently released the Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer e-Book/app and already have How the Grinch Stole Christmas available as an eBook/app as well. ($.99)

NORAD Tracks Santa: It’s the countdown to Christmas! On Christmas Eve, follow Santa in 3D as he flies around the world in from the NORAD webpage/app or track him from their website in Google Earth. Maybe a new tradition to add to the annual “Twas the Night Before Christmas” reading, huh? By the way, when I checked their website today there was something like 3 days and 15 hours left until Santa starts flying. Consider this your elf update. (FREE!)

iGevalt Dreidel Simulator: This app is a simple simulator of the dreidel itself. You can spin the dreidel with a swipe of your finger, or by using two fingers and "spinning" it. When it lands, a popup will appear that shows you what you got and what to do when you're playing the game. There are real sounds of kids playing right along with you! A MacWorld App Guide TOP PICK! ($.99)

123 Color: Hanakkah Coloring Book: 123 Color Hanukkah Edition teaches numbers, letters, and colors, with engaging artwork, music, sound effects, and voice-overs spoken in 12 languages and dialects. Four coloring books are included: Hanukkah Cartoons, Winter Cartoons, Autumn Cartoons, and Shapes. The app uses a freestyle finger painting with Perfect Paint™, patent-pending technology that makes it impossible for kids to paint outside the lines. Who wants to color inside the lines anyway?

GIVEAWAY: The creative minds at Think Up LLC want to give one lucky (cool) progeny reader a FREE Kiddie Christmas Tree app. Want to win it? Head over to our FACEBOOK page to enter. It's a flash giveaway and ends tonight (Tuesday) at midnight!
