"Get Wet" at Merritt Athletic Club in Eldersburg

For the last four weeks, Lila and I have particpated in swimming lessons at Merritt Athletic Club in Eldersburg. The six week class is sponsored by the Michael Phelp's Swim School, happens on Monday nights starting at 5:05 PM, and runs exactly 30 minutes. Cost for six lessons is a little steep for non-members: $99.00, but it's worth every penny.

First off, the club is terrific! The facilities are absolutely first class and everyone on staff at the club is so very nice and friendly. Merritt has everything you could want in a health club, but the swimming facilities are particularly great. There are two interior pools: one is just for laps and the other smaller pools is strictly for lessons on a daily basis.

I really can't speak to the workout facilities. I stopped really lifting weights etc.. when I began to get sore after lifting and this began to interfere with my golf game. However, from a far, I can tell you that -- from the looks of things -- they have an array of different machines and free weights.

You can take just about any class at the club ranging from Karate to Yoga. The men's locker room is very nice and has a lounge with a tv that always seems to have one of the ESPN channels on with two very nice cigar parlor chairs for anyone who wants to sit down and watch for a few minutes. I am assuming the women's locker room is just as nice.

If you do not want to change your little one in the men's/women's locker room, they have two family bathrooms. Although both are very nice, they are always occupied and never seem to free up quickly. I recommend just going to the respective locker rooms and using the vast counter space as your changing table.

As far as your wardrobe is concerned, I wouldn't worry about changing after the lesson. It is difficult with one parent to change the baby and yourself at the same time. You have no where to put the baby while you change yourself and handle all of the pool stuff that comes with being at the swim lesson! I typically change Lila out of her suit and into dry clothes, but 'air dry' myself on the way to the car.

As for the actual lesson, all of the kids absolutely love it. The Get Wet Class is just for babies and toddlers, from six months to thirty-six months in age. Our class is small with just four babies, and the parents often switch off so everyone can experience the fun (sometimes we're a class of dads, sometimes I'm the only dad, and Heather took Lila once, too).

The instructors show you a range of exercises and techniques to help you and your little one enjoy your time in the pool. One of my particular favorites is the use of a noodle where you tuck each end under your armpits and put your little one in between you and the noodle (we're demonstrating the noodle trick at a Memorial Day picnic in the photo with this post). This keeps them afloat easily and allows for their hands and feet to remain free - - really important in the pool. For the parent, it is great because it gives your arms a rest and allows your hands to remain free. Perhaps to hold your favorite cold beverage in one of them?

In the end, the thirty minutes that I get to spend with Lila in the pool is a great way to end a Monday.

"COOL" TIP: Pack a separate tote bag that's 'just for swimming.' We've got two beach towels, two swim diapers, two regular diapers, wipes, a brush, bathing suits for everyone, change of clothes for Lila, and flip flops for me in ours. Right after lessons, throw everything into the washing machine and repack the bag for next week. (Who wants chlorine-filled towels lying around anyway?) Put it near the door so you don't have to do the Monday morning scramble!

"App" Local with The KneeBouncers

You know that moment in the grocery store where you need about 10 more minutes to finish up, but your toddler only has about 3 more seconds of cooperation left? That's when I whip out my iPhone and pull up the "Peek a Bouncer" App. Lila LOVES it! And you can't get a much better endorsement than a thoroughly-entertained 11-month-old.

So if you have a little gal or guy at home, you really need to get to know these little guys: the KneeBouncers. The KneeBouncers website has fabulous free baby and toddler games made especially for the "little itty bitty ones." That is, those under 4. Your youngster can learn their letters, numbers, colors and shapes all while interacting with these friendly characters. Hitting any key on the keyboard works, so don't worry if your child hasn't abnormally mastered fine motor skills during their pre-preschool years!

Fair warning: your keyboard can take a beating. You may want to invest in a cheap external keyboard. KneeBouncers also posted this video showing how their games can be played on an iPad. What a great excuse to get an iPad, huh? And as I mentioned earlier in this post, they've got two great iPhone apps: the Peek-A-Bouncer App and a new app, Calling All KneeBouncers. I especially love that your curious toddler can't really get out of the app (and into the rest of your iPhone) unless they hit the home button. Thankfully, Lila hasn't figured that out yet. Check out the apps on iTunes, the KneeBouncers website or even Facebook.

The best part? KneeBouncers is a local business! The founders/developers work out of a Sykesville-based office. So log on and 'app' local!

Gooey Pizza Delight in Downtown Mt. Airy

Early Sunday afternoon,we were near Mt. Airy on a trek back from Frederick. All three of us were starving and the little voice from the back seat was starting to escalate. So we took the nearest exit, drove down Main Street in Mt. Airy and found a variety of great options that looked Lila-friendly. We ended up at a chic looking pizza joint, Laurienzo Brick Oven Cafe. Thin-crust pizza, the All-American friendly toddler food, seemed to be a good bargaining option: we had a prayer of getting some veggies into the Bug and she could experiment with tomato sauce as finger paints.

The service was beyond friendly and there was a fairly good-sized "family" crowd. We were immediately seated with a restaurant-grade high chair (perfect for slipping under the table so the bug felt like she was eating 'with us'). We ordered a 12-inch tomato and basil pizza, two drinks and settled into a game of "who wants a cheerio?" while we waited for lunch.

The pizza was a gooey delight. Super thin crust, lots of cheese and a sauce that rivaled some of the best either of us had while studying in Italy a few years ago. The Bug ate it without complaint, a pretty great sign. The pies only come in one size, but 12" was plenty for the three of us. We even brought three slices home.

Lila started getting antsy after the meal, so we opted out of dessert (although the menu was pretty tempting!). Has anyone else tried the food at Laurienzo's? What did you think?

Although the food was delicious and the service was great, there were a few downsides to dining at Laurienzo. The first issue? Acoustics. Despite a pretty good-sized lunch crowd, Lila's screeches (she only has one volume right now - - LOUD!) echoed in the cavernous space. That intimidated us a bit and made us more likely to leave sooner; we didn't want a few squawks to interrupt other diners.

Another issue? No changing table in the bathroom. Now, each bathroom was a single room and handicapped accessible, so in a pinch you have plenty of space to throw down a changing pad on the floor. I wouldn't describe myself as a raging germaphobe, but we still opted to change Lila in the car. (I had seen an ABC news story about the bathroom floor being more germy than a toilet...).

On the plus side, a stroller could easily fit through the aisles in the restaurant. Easy exit route if your little one is having an off-day. They also have an al fresco dining option (which we always prefer - - but it was of course, raining).

So if you're shopping on Main Street or in the Mt. Airy area, we would definitely suggest grabing a drink and a meal at Laurienzo. They boasted having some of the best Bloody Marylands, Mojitos and White Sangria around. I must admit, my mojito was delicious.
