what's up for the weekend... april 1 - 3

Hot off the press... our picks for family fun this weekend! There's a ton going on -- everything from activities under the Big Top to Fairy Tale Celebrations to Barn Parties (yeah, you heard it right. Barn parties!). Plus, our favorite Farmer's Market is BAACCKK. For a more complete listing, check out our calendar.

Barnum 200: We had a blast at Opening Night of Barnum 200 -- the new show from Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus on Thursday. We know you will too! Trapeze artistry, elephants, tigers, clowns and more. The greatest show on earth is in town until April 10th. (Be sure to check out the Elephant Lunch at Lexington Market on April 6th, too!)

Piglet Party: Kinder Farm Park is partying with the piglets on Saturday from 10 AM - 1PM. Join in on the fun! Hay rides, pig origami, and more. $6/car to enter and nominal fees for crafts. Many thanks to (cool) progeny reader Melissa for sharing this find!

Fairy Tale Extravaganza: Families are invited to help kick off the annual Fairy Tale Festival with crafts, magic, a giant knight, free pictures, and more all weekend at the Enoch Pratt Library Central Branch. Preschoolers can also attend a special ball on Sunday (1pm), so they should wear their finest attire or dress-up as a prince or princess, and enjoy live music, dancing, and crafts.

Youth's Benefit Elementary School Yard Sale: The Youth’s Benefit Educational Foundation (YBEF) will hold its second annual community YARD SALE AND CRAFT FAIR on Saturday, April 2, 2011 from 8 a.m. – noon at Youth’s Benefit Elementary School (YBES), 1901 Fallston Road in Fallston, Maryland. Score a few "new" toys for a cause!

Fishing Rodeo!: Bring your own rod and reel or borrow one of a limited number and try to catch some of the monster bass that call the Boat Lake home at Patterson Park! The rodeo, produced by the Baltimore City Department of Parks and Recreation, is open to ages 15 and under and all children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Round up the fun on Saturday from 10 AM - 1 PM.

NanoDays at The Maryland Science Center: Explore the exciting world of tiny technology at the Maryland Science Center’s NanoDays on Saturday from 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM. New nanotechnologies may soon have a huge impact on our lives; join us for some hands-on activities to discover how and why. The world of nano includes art, nature, and even food! Uncover the mysteries of the super-small science that makes stained glass red, butterfly wings iridescent, and pants stain-proof. Eat some nano ice cream or find out about new ways to treat cancer. There’s something for everyone when it comes to nano!

FREE Screening! Born to Be Wild 3D: Born to be Wild 3D is an inspiring story of love, dedication and the remarkable bond between humans and animals. Columbia AMC Theater is having a FREE screening of the film on Saturday from 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM. For your complimentary tickets to an advance screening of BORN TO BE WILD 3D in Columbia, MD on Saturday, April 2 at NOON log onto www.gofobo.com/rsvp and input the following code: BLTBP7S to download your tickets.

Family Fun Day at the Jewish Museum of Maryland: Celebrate the publication of the Museum's first childrens book, The Synagogue Speaks, on Sunday! The event will include a reading of The Synagogue Speaks, and will also feature hands-on archaeology, architecture, and painting activities.

OrchKids: The Pied Piper: This Sunday at 3:00 PM, Marin Alsop leads the BSO in this colorful interpretation of the Pied Piper legend, featuring Principal Flutist Emily Skala performing its tour de force solo. This imaginative score incorporates the BSO OrchKids on flutes and drums as they follow the piper to safety. The whimsical journey continues with the Cinderella Suite, one of Prokofiev’s most popular and enduring ballet scores, noted for its jubilant melodies.

Baltimore's Farmer's Market: It's opening weekend of the Farmer's Market! We couldn't be more excited... and what else is there to say? It's our favorite spring/summer/fall weekend activity. Here's hoping the weather cooperates... Check it out on Sunday under the JFX Overpass from 7 AM - 12:00 PM.
