how does a nap sound? announcing our december give mom a break winner!

The hustle and bustle of the holidays have given way to the chill -- and frozen pace -- of January. Perfect time of year to rejuvenate. Thanks to Pampered Mommas, one lucky Charm City mom is getting a worry-free snooze.

That's right. One randomly-selected mom is getting the much anticipated, uber appreciated, usually unlikely three letter word: NAP. And while she rests or reads or zens out (her choice!), her kids will be cared for by the trained mom staff from Pampered Mommas.

{Kinda wishing I was eligible for the Give Mom a Break contest right now...}

And the winner is...

pro advice for moms-to-be

Whether you're a veteran mom or still have your training wheels on, every gal can benefit from a little pro advice when she is expecting.

I know, I know -- NOT MORE ADVICE! Advice seems to be like conversational currency when you're sporting a baby bump. Everyone from your great aunt Martha's bff with 12 kids, to the lady standing behind you at Target, to the co-worker who wants to chat about 'how his wife dealt with sciatica' wants to weigh in.

Today's pro advice comes from, well, professionals. Who just happen to be moms as well. Like your margarita mocktail (and all advice for that matter), this mom advises you to take it with a grain of salt.

five reasons you should check out thursday's pregnant and chic mixer

Last month, Wee Chic launched their new mixer concept for mommies-to-be --- a HUGE success. Think mocktail party where expecting moms can hob nob with Charm City's leading baby experts. No stress, just a fun opportunity to ask all of those questions to people who really know. The fun continues this month on Thursday (October 13th) at 6:00 PM with another Pregnant and Chic mixer at Wee Chic. Here are five reasons you should come:

1.The idea of compiling your registry is overwhelming. The baby whisperers at Wee Chic will be there to help you wade through the 'must haves' and the 'not necessaries.' (PS: The wipe warmer? NOT necessary.)

2. You have questions about breast feeding that you don't want to post in an online "mommy" chat (yes, they can be scary if you're not in right place). Stephanie from Zoe Maternity will be there, happy to answer them.

our big news: give mom a break!

It's 5:30 PM. Bewitching hour. You've just picked up the kids from daycare after rushing through the drive-through bank line and dry cleaners. Everyone piles through the front door, books and keys strewn everywhere.

You toss a load of laundry in, pull out some frozen  chicken breasts, grab a sippy cup of milk for a complaining toddler and flip on the local news. A little voice pipes up (ok, demands) Calliou. As you explain that it's important to know what's going on in the world, your iPhone buzzes. The intern at work incorrectly sent out a meeting agenda to the wrong people. Great.

Scan the fridge for some veggies and realize the broccoli you bought last week is no longer good. Opt for frozen peas. Spin around just in time to see your toddler drawing on the wall. In permanent marker. (Where did she get that?)

moms night out: movie, nosh & swag

I don't know about you, but after four straight nights of toddler teething midnight mayhem -- I'm really feeling like I could use a break! So join (cool) progeny next Wednesday Night (September 28th!) for our first-ever MOMS NIGHT OUT.

We'll start by noshing on apps and nabbing a glass of wine at Lebanese Taverna starting at 5:00 PM. Then we'll head over to Landmark Theatre in Harbor East for a showing of I Don't Know How She Does It at 6:50 PM. $20 covers your glass of wine or martinini, apps and movie ticket. Plus every mom will be leaving with a little special swag bag.

I know this is a little last minute... But when the opportunity came our way to throw this little shindig and give all of the moms who read our blog a break, I couldn't pass up it up!

doing it all (and taking a break)

I had a production meeting on Monday afternoon that was something akin to a three-ring circus. I was seated at my kitchen counter in front of my laptop, while the lights above flickered. BGE workers pounded the pavement outside my open living room windows. My videoconferencing software kept crashing -- every time I needed (ok, was hoping to!) say something poignant. I had a raging head cold that made me sound like a lounge singer who had smoked for 60 years. And my two-year old was sitting on the floor next to me with a blanket over her head yelling "FIRE! FIRE!"

Yeah, this is doing it all.

As moms (or all parents really), we have a lot of balls we keep in up in the air. I don't know that there is a magic tip for getting everything accomplished. Rather, I think it's simply a survival strategy:

You prioritize. You evaluate. You act. Repeat.

The toddler was yelling "FIRE!" Obviously, she needed attention. Obviously, trying to focus on my meeting and her needs simultaneously wasn't working. Obviously, something needed to change.

I quit my job. {{Whew.}}

I am lucky. I had a job I loved that allowed me to work from home most of the time, gave me a ton of flexibility and a boss who understood -- and appreciated -- family balance.

Even with all of that flexibility, I realized that I needed more. Freedom to be my own worst enemy in terms of how I managed my work. A new challenge. The ability to go for a bike ride with my daughter at 10:00 AM on a Monday and not feel guilty or that I was wasting 'company time.' Even if I did make up for it by working until 2 AM that night.

So I quit. And decided to open up a consulting firm. Be my own boss.

Prioritize. Evaluate. Act. Repeat.

The thing about major life decisions like this is that they come smack dab in the middle of the crazy, hectic routine of every day life with a family. Just because your (ok my) world is radically change, it doesn't change the fact that the dog needs to be groomed, the toddler's preschool paperwork was filled out incorrectly by the doctor's office, the car needs an oil change, my sister's 24th birthday is next week and I don't have a brilliant gift idea yet, I volunteered to bake cookies for 150 this weekend, or that I've been carrying around a good friend's birthday card and three gifts that need to be mailed for a WEEK...

Sound like your life? That's why it's important to take a break. And why I'm headed for a little me-time mini-break this weekend instead of getting the oil changed. I'll do that next week.

Eversave recently surveyed more than 700 moms to find our how they "do it all." Data showed that moms stress about money, their kids, finding time with their spouses and do everything from shove things in closets before guests come over to nab fast food once a week in order to save time. Where do moms skimp? I'm sure you're not surprised by this... they skimp when it comes to themselves.

The short? Eversave wants to give moms a mini-break. So Eversave Baltimore is running a fabulous deal today: $22 for a mani/pedi at We Treat Feet. And one lucky (cool) progeny reader is nabbing the deal for herself and a friend. For FREE. Need a mini-break? Fill out this quick form to be entered in the random drawing. We'll announce the winner on Friday!

My last 'official' day of work is Friday. I have a feeling Monday is the start of one wild ride. Luckily, I have lots (and I mean LOTS) to look forward to. Including some fantastic new ventures for (cool) progeny I just can't wait to share.

(cool) tip: To keep up with all Baltimore Eversave Deals, follow them on Twitter and 'like' them on Facebook!

Disclaimer: This post is part of Eversave's "I Don't Know How She Does It" Blog Carnival. I received a free mani/pedi Eversave deal as part of sharing my thoughts on doing it all, and hosting a mani/pedi giveaway. Want to know how other moms are doing it all? Check out the carnival at www.momgenerations.com.

mommy mixers: mocktails with a side of advice for moms-to-be

Do you remember being seven months pregnant? For me that was the magical moment where everyone I encountered had an uncanny desire to impart their parenting or childbirthing words of wisdom. Random woman standing behind me at Target? She'd want to know how long I was planning on breast feeding. (Not "if" mind you -- how long). Casual colleague at a business meeting? He'd ask what my childbirthing plans were and toss in a "You will get the drugs right? My wife was crazy wild until she got the epidural."

Really. What do you say to that... except resist the hormone-driven urge NOT to snap back none of your business?

Then came the onslaught of mailings wanting to know how I would bank my child's umbilical cord, a myriad of free formula samples, information on how to start saving for college... Overwhelming is the understatement of the year.

{{You do remember, don't you? Yeah, my blood was pumping a bit, too. Insert zen moment. Then come back... I've got good news!}}

Bridget Stickline, owner of Wee Chic - A Baby Boutique in Green Spring Station, remembers moments like these and has vowed to give Charm City's new moms and moms-to-be a guilt-free, fun opportunity to mingle with local experts and resources, hold the sales pitch. Her brainchild? Mommy Mixers. For the modern mom who's pregnant and fabulous.

Wee Chic has partnered with Baltimore's Child Magazine to host three different Mommy Mixers this fall. Moms-to-be (and new grandmas too!) can sip mocktails and chat it up with area experts who will share tips on everything mom and baby! Styling a nursery, nutrition, car seat installation, baby proofing, infant massage -- all your questions answered in one place.

The first mixer takes place on September 15th at Wee Chic from 6 pm - 8:30 pm. Mixing and mingling with mamas-to-be and their friends will be Ana Goldseker from Mindful Nutrition, Rochelle Walker from Pampered Mommas, Lindsay Klatsky from Charm City Kids Club, Sheena Hill from Purposeful Parenting, and of course -- Bridget from Wee Chic.

Bring future grandma or a friend to enjoy prizes, giveaways, and "preggers" friendly light fare and drinks. Mommy Mixers are reservation-based and space is limited so call 410.878.7400 to grab your spot.

For more Mommy Mixer updates, check out the Facebook Event Post and be sure to 'like' Wee Chic on Facebook!

mommy sanity savers & healthy tips from mindful nutrition

When talking about nutrition and self care, this is the time that most of my mommy clients fall off the wagon. It’s the crazy time when camp is over and yet there is still a week or two to go before school time. It’s “showtime” and the moms need to be “on.”

The mommies are too busy to cook, care for themselves or go to the grocery store. We are grabbing anything to eat, while on the run, and are just feeling bogged down and lousy. What’s worse is that they want more sugar. They can’t stay on a healthy plan. What to do?!

Here are a few simple steps that will help with cravings, and will hopefully support your sanity.
  • Get enough water and sleep. Most know that, but few can do it! With more sleep and water, you are better able to meet the other challenges. It’s true!! You totally have more will power and can say no to the chocolate marshmallow covered snowball when you have slept a full 8 hours and are not parched. Believe me!!
  • Do a protein shake every morning! Want energy fast and easy? Get a boost from these easily made and deliciously cool concoctions. Have one in the morning for a great balance of protein, fats and carbohydrates, or do it in the afternoon during the 3pm “dwindles.” These are great for kids too. Make a blender full and share it. Call it a “milkshake” and watch them guzzle it down.
  • Green lemonade. It is a filling and detoxifying drink. Put some lemons, cucumbers, mint and a bit of stevia into your blender. Blend and serve over ice. Sip in the morning and after lunch for an amazing pick me up. This will help make you more alkaline, help with weight loss, and sugar cravings.
  • Take your snacks with you everywhere. Whether you think you are going home or not! Getting caught unawares without something to eat is when you have to pull over and get a donut!! Travel with protein bars, cherries, apples and raw nuts.
  • Get protein at breakfast and lunch. In my practice, this is where I see most women get tripped up. Women stay “in control” for some of the day, but when 3pm comes, or after dinner, they get waves of sweet and carbohydrate cravings. This is happens when meals aren’t balanced enough. Go ahead and eat the bigger breakfast and lunch. You will see that the cravings are diminished.
  • Detox! Do a week or a month detox of protein shakes and light meals. This is a great jump start to any wellness program.
Try a couple or all of these things to get ahead of the busiest weeks of summer. Do a little self care in the morning and enjoy huge payoffs.

Mommy & Me: Photoshoot with Lil Blu Dragonfly

My security blanket is made of hard plastic and refraction lenses.

In other words, I hate having my photo taken. So I'm always behind the SLR camera. I don't really know what I'm doing and require a lot of natural light so I don't get tripped up in f-stops. But I'm far more comfortable fidgeting with buttons than fidgeting with my smile.

Consequently, while I have thousands of photos of the Bug, there are almost none of the two of us together.

The kid is going to be 2. It was time to remedy that.

Enter Jennie Sjursen of Lil Blu Dragonfly Photography. Jennie did a beautiful job capturing my entire extended family last fall, and was willing to jump in with two feet for a lil "mommy and me" afternoon. It was really Mommy and Me plus Jennie. The Bug kept trying to 'serve her tea' as she was snapping away!

There was jumping on the bed, lots of tickling and flying...

And how could we forget singing the "Wheels on the Bus?"

If you're a mamarazzi like me, you probably jump through hoops to get your kids to smile at the lens. For this particular shoot, we were just trying to keep the Bug in the same general vicinity -- a bit of a challenge. Jennie came to our home, had lots of great ideas, drank 72 cups of 'pretend tea,' and even pretended to eat a licked goldfish. That's class in my mommy book.

Need a little mommy and me photo action of your own? Jennie is giving (cool) progeny readers 10% off their sitting fee AND 15% off of a customized print package (that's so customized you build the package yourself!). Just mention (cool) progeny when you call her to book!

I think one of these shots would look perfect on Pat's desk at work... Whaddya think? Father's Day present conundrum solved?

what do charm city moms REALLY want for mother's day?

We thought about asking our favorite boutiques for the 411 on hot items this mother's day, but asking some of Baltimore's favorite moms was so much more fun.

Hanah Cho
Baltimore Sun Reporter & Charm City Mom Blogger

Mom to adorable 16-month-old Jacob, Hanah is currently facing the same dilemma that many of us modern moms run into: the digital photo crunch. She has tons of images stored on her computer, but would love a bound photo album of Jacob from birth until now. Another treat high on her list? A spa day at About Faces or Red Door. "I’d love a spa day, where I could relax and get a mani-pedi," said Hanah. (You'll see a recurring theme in this feature - - seems like a LOT of "Charm"-ed moms are craving a day of R&R).

Kim Gross
Founder of Rileyroos

If this busy mompreneur could have anything for mother's day, it would be a family reunion. She'd love to have all of the moms in her immediate family (scattered around the US) together for a celebratory day of fun, laughter and relaxation. "A little pampering by our husbands and children would be a nice added touch!" said Kim. She's also dying to try one of the gourmet meal delivery services and isn't afraid to drop a hint. She sent husband Brian one of the deal-a-day-site offers for a local company, Lynn's Meals in Minutes. Kim might love to cook, but finds weeknight mealtime can be stressful and would much rather spend extra time with children Riley (7), Cait (6), and Patrick (3).

Jill Smokler
Domestic Satirist (aka funny mom blogger), Scary Mommy

What we love most about Jill is her honesty -- and we get a daily dose of it on her fabulous blog, Scary Mommy (if you haven't read it, it's more laughs than scary). When we asked her what she wanted for mother's day, she said "alone time." While she might adore her kids Lily (7), Ben (5) and Evan (3), she's craving a few heavenly hours of "me" time. Preferably at The Mt. Washington Spa. And during said spa time she will, of course, dream of world peace. She added at the end of her email interview that she really thinks of every day as mother's day. "I may get sick of them and need a break," said Jill. "But the kids make my life complete. I don't really need a day to acknowledge that."

Mary Alice Yeskey
Director of Marketing, Charm City Cakes

The Charm City Cakes maven (and Duff Goldman's right hand marketing gal) is celebrating her first mother's day this year. {{Congrats Mary Alice!}} Son Spencer is just 4 months and Mary Alice is hoping for a fairy godmother - - er, housekeeper. "When my son was born in December, I got so much help and support in the first few weeks home," said Mary Alice. "But it's a bit of a harsh reality check when all the food and assistance from friends and family starts dwindling off and you're faced with managing everything yourself. What I would love more than anything is a full weekend to do nothing but spend time with my family. I think a wonderful gift would be a gift certificate for cleaning service to could come in and really get my house spic and span, allowing me to just relax and enjoy myself." Mary Alice's choice of cleaning professionals? Stacey's Clean Sweep. This company is local and green - two things that are important to her! {{Us, too!}}

Candace Dold
Reporter, Fox 45 News

Another new mom! Candace will be celebrating her first mother's day with 9-month-old daughter Gianna (although we hear she was treated a bit by her husband and own mother last Mother's Day since she was anticipating Gianna's arrival). What's top on Candace's list? For Gianna to say "Mama" and repeat it -- all day long. "I only get ma on special occasions right now," said Candace. Other things she'd love? A scrapbook full of pictures that capture favorite memories of Gianna since birth, or a spa gift certificate to The Pearl Spa in Howard County.

Claudia Towles
Owner, aMuse Toys
Mom to 10-year-old Sebastian, Claudia is hoping for a little family time this mother's day. "The gift of our moments together and the ability to hold onto the spontaneous and sincere love children are so good at demonstrating" said Claudia. " I think I would want to remember this Mother's Day-- their childhood expressions filled with enthusiasm and sincerity. Time flies, the kids are getting older." By kids she means Sebastian, and her niece Alexandra, who's not her biological daughter but might as well be. She'd love a photo book of the kids, too, because nothing is more precious to her than a moment captured. Probably why she's frequently referred to as a Mamarrazi... Her fav Charm City photographers? The fab folks at Love Life Images, Inc.

See, we told you spa treatments were a hot commodity this year. But let's be honest - - when aren't they? If you really want to score big, give the mom in your life a certificate and 90 minutes on a random Tuesday. You'll be golden.

What are you hoping for?

(just for moms) 10 reasons you should attend style at the station on thursday

Green Spring Station is partnering with Baltimore STYLE Magazine for their second annual, oh-so-mah-velous Style at the Station event on Thursday. The perfect reason to grab your gal pals and play hookie from mommy life for a shopping mini escape.

Here's why I think this is a 'must' for any mom, fabulous aunt, friend, grandmother's sister or second cousin's girlfriend who reads this blog:

10) Shopping. Fabulous shopping. TONS of deals from all of your fav Green Spring Station boutiques. Enough said.

9) Pick up some fabulous spring fashion tips from Stephanie from Bradshaw Styling (have you checked out her blog, Girl About Town?) and Heidi Slacum, the fashionista behind FRESH! Boutique. As you may have guessed, they'll be giving out the tips at FRESH! The boutique will be hosting a Julie Brown Trunk Show that day, too. Check out her summer collection ahead of time!

8) It's Misha & Co.'s debut! The jewelry store has new digs at the Station. Swing by and say hi!

7) My summer shoe selection needs some serious attention. Yours does too? Matava Shoes is having a Cole Haan Trunk Show as part of the April 14th festivities. Sweet. (PS - did you know that you can buy from them online now, too?)

6) Your bottle of Sérum Oléo-Relax from Kérastase is low -- or you don't own it. I swear by the stuff. And UNO The Salon is giving a 15% discount on all of their products. They just so happen to carry Kérastase.

5) Spring holidays are fast approaching and you just realized you have 3 graduation parties, 6 mothers day presents to buy (your mom, your mother in law, and all the grandmas in your life), three wedding showers and your best friend is having a baby. Forget about the gifts for a second - - that means CARDS for everyone. The Pleasure of Your Company will have all of your stationary needs covered -- plus 20% off of Scout by Bungalow, Cat Studio, MacBeth Collection, Graphic Image, Anna Griffin fabric collection, Lily Pulitzer and Jonathan Adler.

4) Live music. And the potential to nosh on the seared scallop appetizer and a bellini with your girlfriends at Tark's Grill. {{Note: DO ask for the bellini. You won't regret it.}}

3) Amazing giveaways at many of the boutiques. Who doesn't love something for free?

2) Wee Chic - A Baby Boutique is hosting trunk shows by Splendid AND Ella Moss -- two of this mom's favorite kid lines. Join Christy & Beth from the New York Showroom of Splendid and Ella Moss kids to preview and preorder your favorites from the July/August deliveries from these two iconic lines. Plus, Bridget is handing out mimosas and treats. Delish.

And the NUMBER ONE REASON TO ATTEND...

1) I can't go. I'll be out of town for work and need to live vicariously through all of you!

Green Spring Station has a full list of events/deals/giveaways affiliated with Style at the Station on their website. The fun happens this Thursday (April 14th) from 10 AM - 8 PM. Those of you who aren't up for playing hookie can leave the kids with the hubs and get your shopping on after work.

If you go, be sure to tell me all about it! Would love for you to upload pics to our facebook page, too.

just for moms: spring wardrobe inspiration

Today is one of those just-for-mom posts. We'll be back to our regularly-scheduled-kid-posts tomorrow!

The yo-yo-ing temperatures lately have coincided with my feelings about my closet.

It's the age-old complaint of women all over the world: I have nothing to WEAR.

The Bug's spring wardrobe is looking much fresher than my own. {{Does THAT sound familiar?}}. Probably because she's growing out of clothes faster than I can acquire them! Me? I'm pretty much staying the same. So I have the internal financial argument: do you really need new clothes?

Of course, there is the added complication of actually finding time to shop. It's almost impossible to find the time or the "Bug Coverage." {{Trying to shop with a toddler in tow could be equated to entering the seventh circle of hell...}}. Therefore, I throw on the same, tired clothes I always do. You know - - those one or two 'every day' outfits I always seem to be wearing.

I need clothes that don't just pull double duty. They have to pull quadruple duty. They have to go to work, playground, dinner out, grocery store, meetings, interviews, play dates, videoconferences, family brunches and (when we get the chance!) date night. I am a work-from-home-or-take-your-kid-to-work mom. So it's not just a cliche saying with me. My wardrobe has to be versatile.

Just when I was going into a rut, the Garnet Hill Catalog showed up today -- and inspired me. I think I'm going to have to make time for shopping...

Some of my picks -- and commentary:
I LOVE a good dress. Especially if it's cotton and comes out of the washing machine looking like it did when I bought it off the rack. Not sold on the fedora, but am a firm believe that if ya got it - - flaunt it.
Needless to say the belt and scarf are still the go-to accessories for spring. I think I'll be investing... Agreed that skirts can sometimes be problematic on the playground. But they are definitely my spring 'go to' item, so I love these looks!
Seriously... love the little flutter sleeved sweater! And hooray for ruffles. They add a bit of sass to even the most basic of staples (i.e. tank tops).

Inspired yourself?

PS: This is not in any way shape or form a sponsored post. Just me. Rambling. All images are from garnethill.com.

just for moms: JLBalt's spring boutique warehouse sale & girls' night out (we're sending one of you + friend for free!)

It's the time of year when the sun stays out longer, the weather gets warmer, and the deals get red hot -- thanks to the Junior League of Baltimore.

Shop for a cause at their annual Spring Boutique Warehouse Sale, featuring some of Charm City's favorite area boutiques. It's twice the size of the 2010 fall sale -- with 31 local stores participating and the number continuing to climb.

You'll be able to grab fabulous items for yourself and home, plus shop for the kiddos in the sale's expanded childrens' section. Wee Chic, Urban Baby Runway, J&M Kids' Boutique and The Monogram Shop will all have merchandise available for purchase.

"Children's apparel and footwear sales have always been excellent at the Boutique Warehouse Sale," said Caryn Dombrow from the Junior League of Baltimore. "Designer children's clothing from Wee Chic, Urban Baby Runway and The Monogram Shop really attracts a crowd, especially when it is discounted."

{{side note: The sale will have stuff for guys, too. But I'm planning to leave my husband at home. Free childcare. I highly encourage you do the same.}}

The sale is free and open to the public from 10 AM - 5 PM on Saturday, March 26th at Timonium Squaure (between Panera and Staples).

Need a little night out for yourself (and maybe a few friends?)? Check out the Girls Night Out Preview Party on Friday, March 25th from 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM. Cocktails, nibbles and -- most importantly -- deals.

A perfect little mini-escape for those of us who need a martini and an amazing new dress.

Little detail? All proceeds from the event and sale benefit the Junior League of Baltimore, a volunteer organization for women interested in making a positive impact in their communities. Fabulous Prices, Fabulous Hostesses at the Junior League of Baltimore's Boutique Warehouse Sale

Have some free time today or tomorrow? Check out the Junior League of Baltimore's Boutique Warehouse Sale at The Wise Penny in Govans. More than 20 of Baltimore's leading specialty boutiques have new merchandise 50-80% off! Scored a bag of clothes for the Bug for about $70 (Tea Collection and Ella Moss - - simply mah-va-lous).

The Junior League of Baltimore hostesses not only have a fantastic fashion sense but they're downright friendly too. They were even kind enough to "highly approve" my purchases from Wee Chic's rack. Seemed like everyone had a little girl at home they loved to dress!

It seemed that many of the boutiques were clearing summer merchandise, so they were great prices on sandals (from Poppy and Stella) and summer dresses (from some of our local favs like Whimsy Boutique!). Have a black tie social function coming up? Fabulous dressy items from Fresh and Garnish, too !

The sale runs today until 5:00 PM and tomorrow from 12:00 PM - 5:00 PM. All proceeds benefit the Junior League's local initiatives.

Stay tuned for more information about JLB's upcoming Coat Sale - - a partnership with Pied Piper Children's Wear.

Read more about their work on their website.

Feeling guilty about going home without a little something for the little ones? Chances are you won't be leaving without a few items for them, too. Our friends from Wee Chic will have a table at the sale. 50% or more off favorite chic child labels like Tea, Pedipeds, LAmade, Wes & Willy, Saurette, Jaxxwear, and more.

The JLB has been kind enough to give one lucky (cool) progeny reader a FREE shopping pass for the 8 AM - 10 AM Pre Sale on Saturday, September 25th. Guess what? That lucky reader will get to bring a friend, too! That's $40 in savings before you even start shopping.

Family-Related vs. Work-Related: Why my life doesn't fall into neat little categories

I'm sure you've heard the news by now. Women are closing the currency gap between themselves and their male counterparts. Or even out-earning (See USA Today article).

As a footnote, these news blurbs note that "women earning the most income are under 35, unmarried, and don't have children."

Clearly, these women have made a choice, are intelligent or excellent managers, and have been fiscally rewarded. I myself have made a different one.

I turned 28 a few weeks ago (gasp - - I know. I DID publicly reveal my age). I have a master's degree and hold a managerial title for a university-based non-profit. I celebrated my second wedding anniversary and my first child's first birthday this past June.

When I learned my husband and I were expecting, there was never a question in my mind that I would return to work after maternity leave. My professional identity has always been important to me and a piece of who I am. I thought it would be a disservice to my family if I gave that up.

But I wasn't sacrificing my family or my child's development for my job.

So I juggle. Meetings, play dates, nap times, conference calls, events, planning sessions, lunches, playground visits, interviews, laundry, friends, doctors appointments, commuting, interviews, blocks, playdough...

Kinda makes me tired just thinking about it.

And while I might not have the time to network every evening like my non-child-rearing counterparts, you bet I make time for an important social event. And story hour. And mommy-and-me. And a walk by myself every now and then.

My life doesn't fall into neat little categories. I can't shuffle things into neat little "family-related," "work-related," "friend-related," and "me-related" piles or chunks of time. I prioritize, shift and everything is categorized as "my life related." Everything in my life is entwined. Or maybe I'm just not facile in compartmentalizing.

While I applaud women who are shattering that glass ceiling, I keep going back to my mom's story. Young attorney. Three active kids. Yet, she made every school function, teacher's meeting, I-missed-the-bus-and-need-a-ride-to-school, dance class, tennis match… you name it.

Thirty years later, did she make partner in a big downtown law firm? No. She's partner in her own private practice. She had to go out on her own in order to have flexibility to work and raise her kids the way she wanted. If you ask her now, she wouldn't have had it any other way.

I've had the great privilege of meeting many fabulous moms out there who were on the fast track in a corporate setting, but felt pressured to leave and start their own companies so they could create a culture of family in their workplace. A lot of times these 'workplaces' are their own living room.

Have we really come that far then? Or is today's corporate environment morphing into a gender-reversed MadMen episode?

It seems that 'family' still hasn't permeated corporate culture. Isn’t it about time we changed that?
