what's up for the weekend... march 11-13

You can tell we're starting to pull out of the winter doldrums and are heading into spring because our calendar is literally exploding. Seems like all of our favorite area places are planning family-friendly weekend activities! Here are some of our top picks for this weekend:

19th Annual Concert for Children and Families: Johns Hopkins University Symphony presents their 19th Annual Concert for Children and Families on Sunday. Best part? It's 100% free. The musical program will be conducted by Jed Gaylin. After the performance, the audience is invited onstage to meet the musicians and see their instruments up close. It takes place on Saturday from 1 PM - 2 PM.

Pebble People: Head over to the Reggie (translation for non B-more residents? The Reginald F. Lewis Museum) on Saturday from 11 AM to 1 PM to soak up a little culture and create some original art. Using imagination, stones and pebbles, children will create works of art inspired by the Material Girls: Contemporary Black Women Artists exhibit. Free with paid museum admission.

Deaf Awareness Day at the National Aquarium: The aquarium celebrates Deaf Awareness Day on Saturday from 9 AM to 5 PM with sign language interpreters narrating all public presentations throughout the day and representatives from deaf advocacy groups on hand to meet with visitors and discuss their activities in the community.

Family Flight!: Headed to the circus or Cirque du Soleil in April? Prime your family with a little flying workshop ahead of time. Designed for ages 5-13, this aerial workshop will have kids and parents suspended in mid air--- together! Using low flying trapeze and swinging steel objects, family flight will feature family partner work, aerial improvisation and circus skills for everyone. The workshop takes place on Saturday from 2:30 - 4:00 PM and advanced registration is required.

Littles Day at Port Discovery: A whole day of activities dedicated to the littlest cuties in your life. This Saturday, children from 1-5 can celebrate spring with The Kindersinger, a moon bounce, a visit from Pets on Wheels, and magic and balloon sculpting by Bubbles the Clown. Free with paid museum admission.

Kids Can Second Sunday: It's all about flowers this Sunday at the Baltimore Museum of Industry. Designed for ages 8-12, children can create and experiment with art, science, and technology projects related to flowers. Free with paid museum admission. Happens from 1-2 PM on Sunday.

A Green St. Patrick's Day Celebration: Get your St. Patty's Day on a little early this year with Masonville Cove Environmental Education Center. They'll have crafts, stories, animals, and games to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day & our environment. Refreshments and take home craft provided. The celebration happens on Saturday from 12 - 2 PM.

Second Sunday Bird Walk: Take advantage of the nicer weather on Sunday from 12- 2 PM and head over to the Marshy Point Nature Center for a fowl-inspired stroll. Explore the estuary and more with their expert bird watchers. Bring your binoculars.

Pre-Purim Carnival: Join The Etz Chaim Center for a fantastic Pre-Purim Carnival- moonbounce, hamentashen-making, balloon shows, mask-making, make your own mishloach manot, music, facepainting, and much, much more. $6 ticket is all inclusive.
