(hot) dish: Emmy-award winning documentary filmmaker speaks out about dyslexia TOMORROW at Loyola

As parents, information is the best arsenal we have when it comes to raising active little thinkers - - no matter what their learning style. So when Cheryl Knauer (@CKismom) informed us of this unique opportunity for parents (and the greater Baltimore community) tomorrow at Loyola University, we just had to share.

Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Harvey Hubbell is leading a discussion at Loyola University tomorrow, Wednesday, October 13, titled “Overcoming the Struggle to Read: Navigating the Challenges of Dyslexia with Confidence.” The event takes place 7:30 – 9 p.m.

Hubbell is a documentary filmmaker who has found great success in his career despite the challenges he faces as a dyslexic. His latest venture is a comical documentary, "Dislecksia: The Movie," which traces the trials he faced growing up as a dyslexic in the 1960s and 70s with discussions on his school performance and how he was handled by teachers. It also examines the root causes of dyslexia and seeks to explain how a dyslexic brain differs from a normal brain. It discusses the prominence of reading difficulties throughout the nation and features a discussion of how educators can hope to improve the current situation.

The event is free and open to the public.

(cool) tip: Hubbell is also the Director of Deslecksia: The Movie, which is scheduled for release in 2011. According to examiner.com, Harvey writes, “Dislecksia: The Movie will be a comic documentary, but it has a serious purpose. It will give viewers a better understanding of the condition itself, the problems it makes for individuals and families, and the programs that are needed to deal with it. It will help dyslexics and their families get the assistance they need. It will give them hope — as well as a crash course in how to laugh at their own condition.”
