cereal = convenience

It's the last week of our cereal exploration. We've talked about how ready to eat breakfast cereal is nutrient rich, dove deeper into the whole sugar controversy and then chatted about the most important topics of toddler food: taste.

Nutrition, low sugar (no preservatives or artificial colors!) and taste greatly influence what I put on the table in front of my toddler each morning. But when it comes down to it, my mornings are hectic. So convenience is also key.

It doesn't get more convenient than cracking open a cereal box, slicing up some fruit and adding a side of yogurt.

We all know that healthy eating habits start when your tyke is a pint sizer, so giving them a healthy breakfast each morning sets them up to maintain that habit for life. Healthy eating habits help your child maintain a healthy body weight (and image!).

Remember that recent study we discussed during week one? Well, 77% of DC parents surveyed believe maintaining a healthy body weight is important to ensuring their child´s health. When it comes to fighting childhood obesity, there is a lot to love about cereal. Frequent cereal eaters tend to have healthier body weights. That´s true of men, women and children who choose sweetened cereals. Teen girls who eat cereal are less likely to become overweight than non cereal eaters. Boys´ cereal consumption is associated with lower body mass index (BMI).

General Mills was kind enough to send our family a gift pack that included 6 cereal samples and an on-the-go container that allows us to enjoy cereal anytime. (Mostly it's been used by Pat, who takes his breakfast to go in the morning and enjoys it at his desk).

We're giving away the same gift pack to a lucky (cool) progeny reader! Want to win it? Just fill out this quick form by Wednesday, July 13th at 5:00 PM EDT. We'll pick a winner then!

This post is part of a four-part series on cereal, sponsored by General Mills through MyBlogSpark. I did not receive any compensation to participate in this blog campaign -- but have received product samples and information from General Mills. Of course, I'll always disclose that to you! In truth, I'm using this opportunity to educate myself and taking (cool) progeny readers along for the ride. Hold on tight! :)
